Kleine

San Francisco, California

Sorry! We're on Vacation As of January 2010, the Sconelette shop is closed. I've enjoyed sharing my sconelettes with the Foodzie community but have moved on to a new business. Thank you for visiting!

(Tell Foodzie if you'd like to find more tasty scones here.)
Kleine’s mission is to create a distinctive experience bringing about awareness of the Fair Trade movement and sustainable cooperatives, one scone at a time.

Our bite-sized sconelettes are made from the finest ingredients around the world. Every spice, grain and dairy product that makes its way into the kitchen is personally selected by Kleine’s owner/pastry chef.

Our ingredients range from those sourced from co-ops in the Philippines to those found at local farmers markets. Our vision is to promote scones, not only as a favorite morning item, but also as the perfect dessert when paired with your favorite after dinner coffee or port.

There are no products matching the selection.

Our Story

I’ve always taken the personalized approach with everything I make. Small individual bites are like little luxuries, I just want to create luxuries with a conscience.

- Treasa Ewing, founder

In 2005, Treasa Ewing began producing ginger scones for Blue Bottle Coffee Co.’s kiosk from her tiny Nob Hill apartment in San Francisco. She was finishing her studies with Le Cordon Bleu’s pastry program at California Culinary Academy, and before class every morning would personally deliver her scones to Blue Bottle via bus or taxi, rain or shine.

Each batch was carefully made by hand using Fair Trade Certified™ and sustainably-produced ingredients. She baked up the leftover scraps and gave them to friends as “sconelettes”, which became a hit almost overnight. Before she knew it, she was receiving orders for those alone and decided to start her own business: Bar Kleine, which is where her journey truly began. Now known simply as "Kleine", German for “little one”, the name truly represents these bite-sized scones while illustrating Treasa’s vision of someday owning her own “scone bar” in San Francisco.

“Treasa Ewing’s inspired creativity to build awareness for Fair Trade has thoroughly impressed us here at TransFair USA. As a socially-conscious gourmet pastry chef in San Francisco, Treasa is familiar with sourcing Fair Trade Certified™ and sustainably-produced ingredients for her sweet creations. However, after watching Black Gold, a particularly revealing movie about the hard-ships of Ethiopian coffee producers and the impact of Fair Trade, she became determined to engage a broader community in the Fair Trade movement. Treasa asked herself how she could increase public consciousness about the lives of farmers and farm workers who produce the many goods we use everyday. Her vision and commitment led her to organize the first 'Bake Sale for Hope' a bakesale/fundraiser for Fair Trade Day, March 12th, to benefit Fair Trade farmers like those she had seen in Black Gold. Treasa was astounded by the positive outcome. Her customers were not only won over by her epicurean expertise but also impressed to learn about the good intentions and responsible ingredients behind her work. She then donated the proceeds to TransFair USA.
